I have an ongoing love of social, local and family history and have been researching my own family tree for twelve years. I have recently set up my own genealogical research business, and I am slowly but surely gaining clients. I love researching not just the names of my ancsestors, but how and where they lived, worked and loved, using original documents and maps to illustrate their histories. I have had several Case Studies published in the family history magazine Your Family Tree and my interest in reading science fiction led me to writing reviews for the British Science Fiction Association's review magazine Vector; I also edited their writer's magazine Focus for six years before handing it on to a new editor. In 2004 and 2005 I was one of the judges in the Arthur C. Clarke Awards for Science Fiction novels (Neal Stephenson's Quicksilver won in 2004 and China Mieville's novel Iron Council won in 2005).

I gained my BA (Hons) in the Humanities in 1992, having given up my job in the Inland Revenue to go to university full time in 1990, I studied English Literature, Georgaphy and History; my under graduate dissertation was on feminist science fiction. After leaving university, I have worked in the field of social housing for eighteen years and am interested in the social history of housing from the why/how/when housing became an issue in the nineteenth century, through the introduction of social housing in the twentieth, to the various government initiatives towards regeneration of our inner cities of the late twentieth and early twenty first centuries.
